Whitehall – Leo R. LaChapelle, Jr., 91, of Whitehall, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on May 31, 1925 in Whitehall, N.Y., the son of Leo R, LaChapelle, Sr. and Rose (Gendron) LaChapelle.

Leo and his wife Ruth C. (Rooker) LaChapelle were united in marriage on August 25, 1946 and celebrated 68 years of marriage upon her death on March 25, 2015.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church of Whitehall.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post #83 of Whitehall.

Leo was working for Grand Union Supermarket in Whitehall at the time that he enlisted into the United States Navy on August 16, 1943.  Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Grand Union in Whitehall, retiring as the produce manager after more than 40 years of employment with the company.

He and his wife spent more than 40 years camping at Bulwagga Bay Campground in Port Henry and had developed many friendships over the years.  He had looked forward to going back to camp again this year.  He was an avid fisherman, and could be seen out on Lake Champlain daily with his sons and friends catching his limit.  He also enjoyed hunting and reading.

Besides his parents and his wife Ruth, he is predeceased by her daughter Sheila Martel, and his sister, Roseelma Czesky.

He is survived by his five sons, Perley “Butch” LaChapelle and his wife Shirley, of Whitehall, Donald LaChapelle and his wife Janet of Westminster, S.C., Michael LaChapelle and his wife Cindy, of Whitehall,  Terry LaChapelle and his wife Debbie of Queensbury, and Richard LaChapelle and his wife Stephanie of Whitehall, his 15 grandchildren, Dan, Holly, Jill, Amy, Tammy, Stacy, Michael, Darrell, Eric, Jimmy, Bobby, twins Karrie and Kristie, Colby and Logan, 25 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. His special friends also include Jay and Connie Stoddard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, Skene Street, Whitehall with Reverend Rendell Torres, pastor officiating.

His grandchildren will serve as both active and honorary bearers.

Following the services on Friday, the family invites friends to a reception to continue the celebration of Leo’s life at the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company, Main Street, Whitehall.

A Rite of Committal will be held in the spring in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall

Family and friends are invited to call on the family from 4:00pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home, 210 Broadway, Whitehall, N.Y.  The Whitehall American Legion Post #83 will meet at the funeral home at 6:00 pm at the funeral home to conduct a military memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to either Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 9 Wheeler Ave., Whitehall, N.Y. 12887, the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 188, Whitehall, N.Y.  12887 or to the Skenesborough E.M.S., P.O. Box 333, Whitehall, N.Y.  12887.

I am sorry for your Family's loss, We used to hang out at your house a lot when we were younger. Always liked hanging with the LaChapelle family. Loved running around on the porch, weird the things I remember. Sending you all love and great and happy thoughts.
