Obituary

Whitehall  - Alvin "Stoney" David Stone, 83, of 9 Lafayette Street in Whitehall passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 8th after a long illness. Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Kate (Nutting) (Barker) Stone, his five children; Carolyn Stone of Scotia, NY, Pamela Walters of Norfolk, VA, Alex Stone of Lacey, WA, Byron and Judy Stone of Fairlee, VT and Gary Stone of Dania, FL, two step children that he helped to raise and loved; Fred Barker and Barbie Battease of Dresden, NY and Rose Barker Jerome of Whitehall, three grandchildren, Gregory and Molly Stone of Bradford, VT, Timothy and Shannah Stone of Etna, N.H. and Tanya Thorpe of Troy, NY and eight great grandchildren; Charlotte, Scotland, Eoin and Lachlan Stone, Maia, Nadia and Olivia Thorpe and Lyck Davis.

Alvin was born in Brandon, VT, the 6th of 12 children to Alson David and Sadie Wescott Stone. He had six half-brothers born to his mother during previous marriages and a younger half brother. He considered his mother an angel and a role model as she worked hard to raise 18 children during the depths of the Depression. He is survived by three siblings; Maleita Cram of Brandon, VT, Birdie Pitts of Rutland, VT and Eugene Stone of Newton Grove, NC and a half brother, David Stone of Brandon, VT.

Alvin was known for his playful sense of humor and his love for his wife Kate. Even during his last illness, he took great pleasure in teasing his doctors and nurses and would always leave them smiling. He was an avid gardener and cook, particularly known for his spaghetti sauce and baked bean recipes. He was a strong supporter of the Boston Red Sox, especially when they did well and won. He loved to watch and follow NASCAR. Even toward the end, he kept up with racing and baseball, asking family members the latest sports news in which he took great interest.

Alvin will be missed by all of his family members but especially his wife Kate who took very good care of him during his final illness. There will be no funeral but a memorial service will be held in September.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Alvin's name to either the American Cancer Society, 959 State Rt. 9, Mt Royal Plaza, Queensbury, New York 12804 or the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016.

Alvin's family would like to thank Dr. Anthony Petracca, Dr. Amy Hogan-Moulton and everyone at the Renal Center for all they did for Alvin.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home, 210 Broadway, Whitehall, N.Y.
