Obituary

Whitehall, -  Dovie B. (O'Quinn) Irons, 96, formerly of Skenesborough Harbor Apartments of Whitehall, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 09, 2015 at The Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Granville.

Dovie was born on December 17, 1918 in Poplarville, Mississippi.

Following her graduation from Poplarville High School, she went on to attend college and entered the registered nurse training program.  She enlisted into the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii at the Naval Base during WW II.  She was stationed there from 1942 to 1945.  It was there where she met her future husband, Robert Earl Irons, an Air Force pilot for whom she had been treating.

She and Robert were united in marriage in 1948.  After many years of marriage, they parted and Dovie relocated to Houston, TX. where she continued her career as a registered nurse at several hospitals and nursing homes in the Houston area.

Dovie was a very independent lady.  She remained in the Houston until the age of 85.  She then moved to Whitehall to be close to her daughter.  She lived at Skenesborough Harbor Apartments for 5 years, even after losing her sight.  She thoroughly enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardening, listening to the local radio station WVNR in Poultney and watching television.   She was very interested in politics.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her former husband Robert Earl Irons, four brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include her only child, Susan Smith and her husband Nelson of Whitehall, two grand children; Matthew Smith and his wife Collett of Hudson Falls and Melissa Smith of Whitehall, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre for the care that they provided to Dovie for the past five years.  They will always have a special place in their hearts for the staff that cared for her.

The family requests that memorial contributions in Dovie's memory be sent to:  The Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, Activities Department, 10421 State Route 40, Granville, N.Y.  12832
