Obituary

On April 13, 2025, Gail Lewis, age 86, of Granville, lovingly referred to as "Grannie" passed away peacefully surrounded by the family she adored after a long health battle. Born on June 20, 1938, Gail was one of the ten children born to Robert and Agnes (Sears) Lewis. Defying the culture of the time, Gail and her sisters spent their lives lovingly taking care of their disabled sister until her death, showing her loyalty and devotion to her family. Voted most pleasing personality, best looking, best dancer and best dressed by her class and crowned Miss Slate Queen, Gail had a presence that drew you to her. Known for her warm heart, generous spirit and vibrant personality, Gail was a well-known figure in the Granville community, having worked at many local businesses over the years, including Jamie's formerly Wilson's Clothing Store, Robert's Jewelers, the Liquor Stop and Papillon Fashion Boutique, her last job which she enjoyed working with her family. Her friendly smile and kind spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Gail's generous and hospitable nature made everyone feel at home when visiting her. There was hardly a day that would go by where you could not smell fresh spaghetti sauce that had been simmering on the stove all day wafting out of her family home on Potter Avenue. After a visit, you were full of delicious food, heartfelt conversation, and possibly an item from her house if you admired it too long. She found great joy in giving to others, especially her family, who she was loyal and devoted to.

In April of 1982, Gail made the most important decision when she dedicated her life to her God and Father, Jehovah, and became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. As a loyal member of the Granville, New York Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses she loved sharing the Bible's message of hope and the promise of a paradise earth with those around her. Her faith was her foundation and this hope she held dear especially during her last days.

She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers: Raymond, Don and Robert; her sisters: Kathryn Murphy, Eleanor Layden and Agnes (Aggie) Lewis and her great granddaughter Eliza Grace LaRose. She is survived by her three sisters Connie Williams, Dale Kordish (her Twin), Elaine Riley; her 5 children: Kathryn Keelan LaRose, Patricia Hayward (Roger), John Jack Smith (Lisa), Joseph Patrick Smith (Geri), Raymond VanBuren (Aimee); her 10 grandchildren: Grete Miller (Andrew), Eric Hanser, Joshua LaRose (Naomi), Ashley Anderson (Ross), Erin Hogan (Dale), Ean Smith (Andrea), Alexis Smith, Gavin VanBuren, Peyton VanBuren, Kieran Smith; and her 3 great grandchildren: Dylan Miller, Zachary LaRose and Cameron Hogan.

Gail's life was a beautiful example of loyalty and devotion and she will be sorely missed by those that had the privilege of knowing her.

Gail's family would like to express their gratitude for all those who have been a part of Gail's care and shown their support in many different ways. There will be a gathering at the Hayward's House on Aldous Rd. in Granville on Saturday, April 26th from 1-4pm for those that would like to join the family in remembering Gail's life and to give their condolences. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that if you would like to make a contribution, please make a donation to Hospice as they were invaluable in caring for Gail's needs.
