"Barney" Ross

Whitehall - Gerald A. "Barney" Ross, 94, formerly of Whitehall, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville following a brief illness.
Barney was born on January 9, 1921 in Whitehall, N.Y. He was the son of Anthony E. and Elizabeth (Casey) Ross.
He was a graduate of Whitehall High School, "class of 1940". He excelled on the baseball diamond and was co-captain with his good friend Hackett Conlon of the football team where in 1939 the team went undefeated, untied and unscored upon. He was also on the Whitehall Track and field team. He also served on the naval baseball team in Hawaii.
Barney enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brothers and cousins and the special relationships that they shared. He had many hunting and fishing friends throughout the area. The time that he spent with his family, especially his loving wife, children and grandchildren were very special to him. He also had a special bond with his extended family in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Barney was a lifelong communicant of Our Lady of Angels Roman Catholic Church of Whitehall and currently a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church of Whitehall.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #83 in Whitehall and served as the Grand Marshal for one of their Veteran's Day Parades. Barney also served on the Whitehall American Legion Riverside Park Veteran's Monument Committee as their treasurer and was very instrumental in the formation of the project. He was also a member of the Whitehall Council #276, Knights of Columbus and a 4 th degree Knight of the Right Reverend Msgr. Daniel F. Curtin Assembly #709 of Queensbury.
Following graduation, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy in August 1940. He served on the U.S.S. Blue during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941
Barney and Alice Marie Doyle met at a U.S.O. dance in Philadelphia, Pa. and were married on October 19, 1946 at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in New Philadelphia, Pa.
Barney operated Ross's Restaurant in Whitehall and was later employed as a machine operator at Decora Industries in Fort Edward, retiring after many years of service.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son Victor Ross and his daughter Mary Ellen Ross-Kuster, his infant granddaughter; Shannon Ross and his sister in laws; Alice Ross, Ann Ross and brother –in-law; Richard McGrath.
Survivors include his wife Alice M. (Doyle) Ross of Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville, his three sons; Gerald F. Ross and his wife Patricia of Hartford, Dennis A. Ross and his wife Angella Gibbons of Marshfield Vt., and Christopher D. Ross of Whitehall, his four grandchildren; Grace C. Ross, and David A. Ross of Hartford and Jennifer Kuster and Joel Kuster of Switzerland. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Ross of Queensbury, his brothers; Anthony M. Ross of Hudson Falls, John J. Ross of Whitehall, his sisters; Muriel McGrath and Martha Affinito and her husband John all of Whitehall, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 3, 2015 St. Mary's Roman Catholic Roman Church, Buckley Ave., Granville, with Reverend Joseph E. Arockiasamy, pastor officiating. Following the Mass, the family invites everyone to a luncheon at Bernardo's Restaurant in Granville.
Calling hours will be held at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of the services. The American Legion Post #83 of Whitehall will conduct a service at the church immediately following the Mass.
A Rite of Committal will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Barney's name can be made to Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 9 Wheeler Ave., Whitehall, N.Y. 12887.
The family would like to thank the staff of Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the care that they have given to Barney for the past six years and the care that they continue to give to his wife, Alice.
