Obituary

Whitehall - John "Jack" Hoagland, Sr., 74, of Whitehall, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 8 th , 2017 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a long battle with illness.

He was born on October 1, 1942, in So. Bound Brook, New Jersey, son of the late Albert and Agnes Hoagland. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Albert Hoagland Jr., and Jerry Hoagland.

Jack was a Shop-Rite Supermarket store manager, overseeing multiple stores throughout New Jersey before moving his family to Whitehall in 1978 to open a store of his own. He owned and operated Hoagland's Gas and Grocery on State Route 4 in Hampton. After closing the business, he worked as a merchandising specialist for various independent companies.

Jack was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who could often be found giving of his time within the community or attending each of his grandsons' sporting events.  He took great pride in volunteering and was a selfless man who would do anything and everything he could for others. Some of his involvement within the community included 10 years on the Whitehall Board of Education (he was proud of never missing a single meeting and would even leave family vacations in Maine in order to fulfill his commitment, only to return after the meeting was over), the Whitehall Village Board, where he served as police commissioner, Whitehall Youth League (baseball and football) where he passionately operated the concession stand and was active in fundraising through coin-drops, the Whitehall Recreation Center (where he was the director up until his illness), Whitehall Middle League Baseball and Whitehall High School sporting events.

Jack was happiest when he was watching his sons' and grandsons' sporting events. He was very proud of their accomplishments both on and off the field. He rarely missed a game they were coaching or playing, often making long trips to be in attendance. Another one of Jack's greatest joys was spending time with his youngest son, George. Together, they would go to the drive-ins, rodeo, and have evening supper together in Jack's room each night. George loved his Daddy, and never stopped trying to make him better over the last four years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Candace Linczyk Hoagland, of Whitehall, whom he married on August 29, 1963 and was happily married to for 53 years, his three sons; John Hoagland, Jr. of Whitehall, and his sons, Connor Hoagland of Granville and Evan Hoagland of Saratoga; Jason Hoagland and his wife Christine, of Whitehall, and their sons, Josh Hoagland and Justin Hoagland, of Whitehall and George Hoagland, of Whitehall. He is also survived by his sister, Judith (Al) Vitale, of New Jersey, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins residing in New Jersey.

Honoring the wishes of Jack, there will be no service or public calling hours, and a burial ceremony will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jack's name to the Whitehall Rescue Squad. The family would like to thank the nursing staff in the Special Medicine Unit and Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for their excellent care, and for comforting him throughout the last few weeks.

Rest in Peace, "Pop". We love and will miss you!

Arrangements are under the direction of the Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home, 210 Broadway, Whitehall, N.Y.  12887.
