Whitehall, NY. - Richard A. Barker, Jr., 52, passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Whitehall on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
He was born on March 5, 1965 in Rutland, VT, the son of the late Richard A. Barker, Sr. and Anna M. (Vladyka) Carruth of Shrewsbury, VT.
Richard attended and graduated Mill River Union High School in 1983. He then attended Castleton State College receiving his B.A. in education, graduating in 1987.
He and his wife Susan (Bevans) Barker were united in marriage in Whitehall on July 6, 1996.
Richard was a math teacher in the middle school at Mill River Union High School in Clarendon, Vt. for the past 30 years. Richard touched the lives of many students over the years. He enjoyed teaching the 7th and 8th grade students and helping them to understand and embrace mathematics. He played a major role in the middle school leadership and developed innovative programs to encourage student achievement like the “Barker’s Bucks” program and the introduction of interactive smart boards into the school. One of Richard’s passions was coach of Mill River’s MATHCOUNTS team, a national mathematics competition. Richard dedicated many hours to the success of the students, particularly those who needed it the most.
Aside from his career, Richard loved his wife, his family, his pets, his music, and his Red Sox and Patriots teams. He was a brilliant, selfless man who enriched the lives of all who knew him, especially his students.
Survivors include his mother, Anna M. Carruth of Shrewsbury, VT, his loving wife, Susan B. Barker of Whitehall, their son, Jason Lebron and wife Rebecca and granddaughter Zoey Lebron of Long Lake, NY, his four brothers; Charles Barker and his wife Mellisa of Shrewsbury, VT, Mark Barker and his fiancée, Amanda Earle of Newfoundland, Scott Barker and his wife Stephanie of Sudbury, VT, and Shane Carruth of Burlington, VT. and several nieces, nephews and cousins and many wonderful friends.
Services will be held on Monday, August 14th, 2017 at 6:00pm at the Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home, 210 Broadway, Whitehall, N.Y. 12887. Friends may call from 4:00pm until the time of the services.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 at the Lakeview Cemetery, Cemetery Road in Hubbardton, Vt. Following the committal service, there will be a reception at the Whitehall Elks Lodge, 7 Williams Street in Whitehall to continue the celebration of Richard’s life.
